Hello Jefferson Families!

We had a wonderful Scholastic Book Fair week at Jefferson! It was amazing seeing all of the smiling faces as they left the gym with a new book (or stack)! Thank you to our amazing PTA for planning such an incredible event for our students. We are so grateful for the books purchased for our classrooms as well!

At Wednesday’s Late Arrival our staff learned about the plan for our “Recess Reboot.” Students will be learning the goals of recess time:

  • Have fun
  • Make friends
  • Be respectful, responsible and safe

They also have a daily discussion prompt to talk about as a class about recess to help them to understand what they can do at recess and the impact of their actions if they do not follow the rules. We are working on a video for parent volunteers as well so that everyone on the playground has the same understanding.

Our staff also learned about a six-step Restorative Conversation protocol from our social worker, Ms. Cusack. We will be using this guided conversation with students when they have difficulty with being respectful, responsible, and safe. It’s a great tool to use with your kids at home too!

Have a great weekend!

Lockdown Drill on 10/19
Jefferson students will be participating in a Lockdown Drill required by the state of Illinois on October 19th.  During the drill, students practice what to do if an intruder enters the building. The drill takes no longer than 5-10 minutes.  Students sit in a designated area of the classroom not visible from the door.  Staff check the hallways and lock their doors during the drill. Dr. Podraza and Officer Jorgensen walk the building and check to make sure the protocol is followed. More information on this drill, and a form to opt your child out, will be sent to families on October 12.
