Michelle Guerino

Hello Jefferson Families!

What a great week of bringing our Kindergarten and 1st grade students fully back to in-person learning. It has been a delight to see all of the interaction and enthusiasm as I have been in these classrooms all week. Parents, keep up the good work in self-certifying your students prior to 7:45 a.m. each day! We are looking forward to 2nd grade returning next week and 3rd-5th the week after that! It really helps us to keep things moving smoothly at each door entrance. If you are interested in child-sized KN95 masks, please email Michelle Guerino in the office ( and she will get some to your family.

Thank you so much to Mrs. Dykes for planning a fun virtual Family Math Night! The Podraza household really enjoyed playing the online games in the kindergarten group. I have heard many wonderful things from older students as well!

Calendar Update Confusion

We sincerely apologize for the confusing messages this week regarding the in-person dates for the upcoming weeks. Please follow the following schedule for next week:

Monday-Wednesday: Group A (K-2 Full In-Person)

Thursday: Group B (K-2 Full In-Person)

Friday: Asynchronous for Grades 3-5, K-2 Full In-Person

Please DO NOT park on Crescent during drop-off/pick-up times. We do not have permission from the city for parking here and it causes traffic congestion and safety issues. Instead please park on a side street such as Linden and walk your child across the street.

On inclimate weather days, please follow the map attached here for drop-off points. Please be patient with other Jefferson families as well. There is no need to rush or honk at others. On inclimate weather days we hold attendance and tardies knowing that weather is a factor in students arriving at school on time.

Social Distancing During Drop-Off/Pick-Up

As more families are returning to in-person we need to continue to maintain social distancing for the safety of everyone. Please wear a mask as you approach school, including when going through the underpass. Please do not enter school property to pick up your child and remain on the perimeter of the school as well. On days when there is a lot of snow we understand that this last request may be difficult and are flexible in spaces where parents can be.

5 Essentials Parent Survey

The statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey is now open for parents to share thoughts about your experiences with our school. This survey provides critical input to help develop school improvement plans. The survey takes about 10 minutes.Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

To take the parent survey please visit and select the parent survey link. You will need to enter the county (DuPage) and school name.  Our current response rate is 5% and we need it to be at least 20 percent to receive a report.

Students in grades 4-5 will take the survey at our school in March. Under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions on the student survey. If you do not want your son or daughter to participate in the survey, fill out a non-participation form and return it to school. Please be aware that student participation rates are one measure that the state uses in its accountability system for our schools.

The feedback will help us continue to improve our school. Thank you for your cooperation.

CogAT Testing 2nd Grade

Cogat testing for second grade will be March 1st and 2nd. Please look for a communication from your child’s teacher for more information. Students who are fully remote will receive a communication from Dr. Podraza next week regarding a plan for remote student testing. The 2nd grade fully remote students will be taking the test at the same time as their in-person classmates, but in the MPR.

Quarantine Policy & Instruction

Remote Learning will begin within 24 hours of having to quarantine due to exposure or to self-quarantine because of travel. Remote learning for in-person students will be provided by their classroom teacher during quarantine.

Should I quarantine if I travel?

Current guidance from the Department of Public Health recommends that anyone who has traveled outside of Illinois and engaged in high-risk behaviors (i.e. gathering in groups of ten or more, not wearing face coverings consistently, or not following social distancing guidelines) should do the following:

  • Get tested 3-5 days after travel AND stay home for 7 days after travel OR stay home for 10 days after travel

  • Therefore, if you have traveled and engaged in high risk activities, you should either get tested for COVID and stay home for seven days OR stay home for 10 days.

**For the safety of our staff and students, we ask that you take it upon yourself to self-quarantine. There is an added question to our D205 daily health certification regarding travel and the CDC’s recommendation quarantine. Please know that we understand that this is a difficult decision, and we ask that you consider the safety of our community prior to returning to school. We are happy to work with your family to accommodate self-quarantine through remote learning.

One Jefferson One Book Daily Trivia Question Celebrations

Every morning Dr. Podraza has been asking a book-related trivia question. Students may respond in this Google Form daily to be entered in a drawing for prizes that get announced every Friday. Congratulations to Kylie Deegan for her big win this week! See below for more information:

We had 233 responses to the One Jefferson One Book trivia questions from this week! We also had our first two students earn a Bingo on their Bingo Boards! Congratulations to Nora Fromm, who completed hers last week, and to Amelia Fromm, who completed hers on Thursday!

The answers to this week's trivia are:

  • There were 7 goslings born.

  • Charlotte is the one who says she will save Wilbur

  • Spider legs have 7 sections.

We randomly drew names from anyone who submitted a correct trivia answer, and this week's winners are:

Callie Chipain
Shaan Maniar
Clare Norris
Jennifer Nemesi
Mackenzie Bissell
Paige Bullock
Devin Maniar
Aiden Dugandzic
Quincy Byrne

We also had 41 students submit a correct answer for all 3 questions posted this week! One of those students will receive this week's prize, as well as a copy of the book Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech, which is described as a modern classic that anyone who loved Charlotte's Web will surely enjoy! Congratulations to Kylie Deegan! Thank you to everyone who participated, and we hope you are enjoying One Jefferson One Book!
