Jefferson Family Newsletter~August 27, 2021
Michelle Guerino

Dear Jefferson Families,

Today marks the end of the first full week of school!  Our classrooms have continued to work on building relationships with students as well as developing the classroom community.  Students are being introduced to and practicing routines that will help them to be successful all year long at Jefferson School. Social emotional learning and building classroom community will continue to be a focus throughout the school year alongside academic goals.  Please check out our instagram stories today for a peek inside some of the ways we are working on this in the classroom.

At our Late Arrival this week, our teams met in five different committees that will help us to provide a systematic approach to success at Jefferson this year.  They are: Instructional Leadership Team (ILT), Building Logistics Team (BLT), Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS), Technology Team, and Tiger Buddies.

The teams will be meeting once a month to reflect and plan. Tiger Buddies is a new program that we are starting at Jefferson this year to help with building community throughout Jefferson School.  More information will be coming out about this wonderful new program in September.

Have a great weekend!

Jefferson Library Books

This week during library class, all the students checked out library books! Jefferson library books should be returned on the day the class has library so they are able to check out more library books! To find out when your child has library class, please click here. The Jefferson Library needs your help too! There are a number of books still checked out from last year so please take some time this weekend to search your house for any library books from last year and  send them to Jefferson next week! Happy Reading!

MAP Testing (September 6-17)

MAP is a district-administered assessment of reading and mathematics used to measure growth relative to national and local grade level peers.  It is a multiple choice test that students take on the iPad or the Chromebook.  Because the test adjusts to the student, the test can take from 15 minutes to hours to complete each session.  Some students take multiple days to complete the test.  Your child’s teacher will inform you of testing days.  Students with testing accommodations in their IEP will have these accommodations met by their resource teacher.  Administration of the test replaces classroom instruction in reading and math on testing days.   Please reach out to Dr. Podraza with any feedback or questions.

Fountas & Pinnell Assessment (August 30 - September 24)

Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System is a district-administered, one-on-one assessment that assists the teacher in determining students’ reading levels for instructional purposes.  During the assessment, the teacher listens to the student read while taking a running record of accuracy.  Students are also asked comprehension questions to help in determining strengths and areas for growth in reading.  Data from this assessment is analyzed during PLC’s and used to match appropriate instruction for students in literacy.  Students are expected to work independently while their teacher is administering the assessment to classmates.   To help classroom teachers finish the assessment in a timely manner, the assessment may also be given by the reading specialist, instructional coach, resource teacher or EL teacher.
