Weekly Weber Update

March 19, 2018

Dear Jefferson Families,

As we head into Spring Break, I hope everyone is able to take some time to spend with family and relax. It is hard to believe that we will only have eight weeks of school remaining when we return. The students have grown so much this year and I am so proud of them. We will have many things coming up in the next two months, so please make sure to check our website for updates.

Congratulations to Grant Huckabee! He won first place in the recent district-wide Chess Tournament. I would also like to congratulate Noveena Thakar and Nikhita Thakar, both will be moving on to the state for their entries into the PTA Reflections contest.

We received a wonderful thank you letter from Mary Queen of Heaven Church in regards to our donations from the Giving Tree. They were able to help a total of 300 individuals and they had some gift cards left over and are able to help another 15 families during the Easter season. Thank you to all who were able to contribute.

When we return from Spring Break, students in grades 3-5 will be participating in the PARCC assessment. This assessment is mandated by the state and assesses students in the areas of math and reading. Teachers will be sharing their testing schedules with you through their weekly communications. As with any testing, a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast will help students during this time.

Home for Lunch
As the weather gets warmer, there is usually an increase in students who leave for the lunch hour. Please make sure to follow these steps in order to ensure that the we are able to account for all students during the lunch period. Please email the teacher and copy Mrs. Guerino on the email, in case there is a substitute, that your child will be leaving for lunch. Your child will need to sign out in the office when they are leaving and then check back in when they return. Students are not to walk home by themselves, we ask that a parent or guardian picks them up.

Jump Rope for Heart
Jump Rope for Heart is coming up soon! This year's event will be happening during your child's PE class during the week of March 19-23. In the weeks leading up to this awesome Heart Health event you're able to help your child fund-raise for the American Heart Association. Please follow this link, to get your child registered.

Remember Jump Rope for Heart is not just about who can raise the most money. We are focusing on spreading awareness of heart health, so help your child send those emails!! Be on the lookout for an informational handout to come home, giving you more information about the Scare Squad Monsters. Please direct any questions about Jump Rope for Heart to Mrs. Spinelle (

Class Placement 2018-2019
It’s that time of year again when plans for next fall start to take shape. The student placement process is quite complex and careful thought is given to each individual student’s learning strengths, challenges and peer relationships to create the best learning environment for all. Sometimes parents have additional information to add as it pertains to a child’s learning style or serious peer conflicts that might impact the learning environment. If you wish to communicate such information to be considered, please put your thoughts into writing and send them to me no later than Monday, April 9th. We are dedicated to providing a learning environment that enriches academic growth and enhances the social development of each child at Jefferson School. Please remember that a request for a specific teacher is not appropriate.

SOLES for Kids
The York High School Key Club is again sponsoring a “Soles for Kids” shoe drive, and we are asking for your support and assistance with this endeavor. Through the generosity of District 205 families, they have successfully collected over 8,000 pairs of shoes over the past six years. The drive started Monday, March 5 and will conclude on Friday, May 11.

Soles for Kids is a charity organization that collects gently used shoes and sends them to needy children and adults in Africa as well as Indian Reservations in the United States. Many times families in these places need to pick between shoes and food, so we aim to provide the shoes for free.

For more information on the charity itself, such as where the shoes are going or how they are getting there, please visit the Soles for Kids website.
