Weekly Weber Update

October 15, 2017

Dear Jefferson Families,

Thank you for another amazing night! The Science Olympiad was a fantastic success with an increase of about 100 students from last year! Thank you to Mrs. Vogel and Mrs. Grant and all of the amazing volunteers that make this event so fabulous.

For those of you who may not know, we have a fabulous social worker at Jefferson named Ms. Cusack. She is very well-known by our students. Ms. Cusack sometimes goes into classrooms for specific presentations to support students as well as supports students individually and in small groups. She organizes events such as our upcoming Bullying Awareness Week and Kindness Week as well. Ms. Cusack is not only a great resource for our students and staff, but also has wonderful resources for parents. Her website has a tremendous amount of information and supports that are very helpful in supporting children both at home and school. I am including the linkto her website as a way for parents to become familiar with the resources she provides. Thank you Ms. Cusack for all you do for our Jefferson community.

Please remember to check our website often to stay up to date with important events. You can also access the PTA website and a variety of other resources through theJefferson website. We are also on Twitter @JeffersonD205!  We are up to 64 followers!

Parent Teacher Conferences
This year conference sign-up will be online. This is a two part process that will begin this week. Thursday, you will receive a secure email from D205 that will contain a letter and link for you to register and have a parent single sign-on (SSO) to our PowerSchool system. This will allow you to then sign up for conferences beginning at6:00am on November 7th. The window for conference sign-up will be until November 14th. Conferences this year will be 20-minutes and will be on Monday, November 20th in the evening and Tuesday, November 21st during the day.

Erin’s Law Presentations
Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193, became Illinois law in 2013. This legislation requires schools to teach age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention for grades Pre-K through 12. In Elmhurst, we already have personal safety built into many grade levels’ health education curriculum.  Beginning two years ago, after reviewing the requirements of the new legislation, we recognized that our students could benefit from additional information and strategies in order to consider past events and prevent future encounters. Again this year, an award-winning non-profit group, Imagination Theater, will deliver age-appropriate experiences for our students in 1st through 5th grade. Information about their program, called “No Secrets,” may be found by visiting www.imaginationtheater.org. Ms. Cusack, our social worker, and myself will visit the Kindergarten classrooms to share age-appropriate read-alouds with students. Jefferson will host Imagination Theater on Thursday, October 19th.

Halloween Parade
The Halloween Parade is a wonderful Jefferson tradition! Students should wear their costumes to school and bring a change of clothes with them. Please do not send your child to school with scary masks, plastic weapons or anything that would be inappropriate for elementary students. The students will be getting changed immediately following the parade, so please do not have them come in sprayed hair or make-up that would be difficult to take off. The parade begins promptly at8:30am and students will come out Door 1 and proceed down Poplar and turn right on Niagara and then right onto Linden Ave and return into school through Door 2. Please do not have dogs on the route as well, as we want to ensure all students feel safe.
