Welcome to Second Grade!

Dear Second Grade Families,

Welcome to second grade!  I know it is going to be a fantastic year. I would like to tell you about myself and my goals for this school year.

For those of you who do not know me, I grew up in Elmhurst and have wonderful memories attending District 205 schools.  This is my fifteenth year as a teacher at Jefferson, and also student taught in first grade here! Prior to teaching second grade, I taught third and morning kindergarten.  I received my master’s degree from Concordia University in Reading Instruction and have a Reading Specialist Degree. My husband, Stevan, and I have two children: Ava (8) and Ella (6) and they go to Jackson School in town.  We also have quite a few pets in the Dobric household. Currently we have two firebelly toads, fish, and this past May we adopted a schnoodle, Bernie, whom we love tremendously! (Honestly, I never realized I could love a dog so much!)  When I am not at work I love to spend time with my family, exercise, do art projects with my daughters, shop and cook. My husband teaches and coaches Girls’ Soccer at York High School. This summer my family and I had fun doing a three-week road trip through Canada.  We visited Niagara Falls, Montreal, Quebec City, Grand Falls, Alma, Halifax, and Digby, as well as spending a little time in Boston, Plymouth, and Cape Cod before heading home.

My main goal this year is to create a positive and comfortable learning community within the classroom.  I want to help each student feel secure and build upon their sense of self-confidence. Equally important, I know each student has a different brain, which means they all think differently.  It’s my job as a classroom teacher to help students grow as learners and as people of good character. If at any time you have a question or a concern, please do not hesitate to contact me. The easiest way to get a hold of me is to email me at: adobric@elmhurst205.org.  I always try to respond quickly, but there are times when circumstances don’t lend themselves to a quick correspondence or your question/concern requires information gathering. I will always do my best to get back to you within a 24 hour period.

I encourage you to send a water bottle and a fresh fruit or vegetable (no peas/peapods please) to school daily. Research shows that both of these items ‘boost’ the brain!

The temperature in our classroom can fluctuate a great deal.  Please have your child bring a sweatshirt, light jacket, or sweater to keep in his or her locker or backpack throughout the year.

Here is our specials schedule for the year (all in the afternoon):

Monday: P.E.

Tuesday: Music and P.E.

Wednesday: LRC

Thursday: Music

Friday: Art

Graded papers will be sent home every Friday. This will sum up the week and give you a chance to have a conversation with your child.  It’s a great opportunity to reinforce learning! I will post and email a weekly newsletter outlining what we will be working on and learning each Monday on my website through Jefferson School.

Even though I have been doing this now for fifteen years, I always get excited about the beginning of a new school year.  If you have any questions, concerns, or even a great/funny story to share, please do not hesitate to contact me!

It was wonderful meeting all of my new students and their families on Tuesday afternoon.  Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
